Sound is the only part of a movie that has to disappear to succeed.
Hardcover · 422 pages · ISBN 978-93-5987-703-7
How do you appreciate something you can’t see? Something that is not supposed to be noticed, but has to make something else stand out?
That is film sound. You should not be aware of it. You should be aware of the story, the film. Be one with the character. Not listen to the birds, or the dog that walks past a hundred feet away for a few seconds.
Who would know that the posh hotel in the film is a 10 x 10 set? That the punch is inches away from the face? People say sound is 20% of the impact. I don’t believe that. If not 50%, it is at least 49.9%. Why? Would a dinosaur scare you by its looks alone? And it is not only the sound. It is the silence too, and where you place it.
So, are we magicians? Maybe not. But we are definitely illusionists.
I have spent more than two decades with that paradox, with over 250 films, multiple languages and countless discussions in dark rooms. This book is a collection of the knowledge that I wish I had with me at the start of my career. There is technique in here. There is also the part we call intuition, only because we have not yet found a better word for it.
What’s Inside
We start with the room, because everything you hear passes through it. Part I is the room and the system: ratios, levels, the LFE, Dolby Atmos, panning, signal flow, clocking, and a chapter on what to do when things go wrong.
Part II is the session itself, from the first conversation to how I set up Pro Tools and the console, and what a mix day actually looks like.
Part III is delivery. The deliverables, mastering, loudness and translation, and the work that carries on after the mix is approved.
And Part IV is the craft. Dialog, effects, music, reverb, emotion, the final mix, and a few techniques of my own. It closes with a chapter for my associates.
